Highland vs Islay Whisky: Region, Peat and Flavour Explained

Part of the Invergordon Scottish whisky guide.

Highland whisky covers Scotland’s largest and most varied whisky region. Islay is a small island region famous for heavily peated malts, but “Islay” does not automatically mean smoke and “Highland” does not automatically mean gentle.

Regions are useful for orientation. They are poor substitutes for reading the bottle and tasting the whisky in front of you. Distillery style, peat, still shape, fermentation, cask type, age and bottling strength all matter.

What are the official Scotch whisky regions?

The Scotch Whisky Association identifies Highland, Lowland, Speyside, Islay and Campbeltown. There is a legal wrinkle: Speyside, Islay and Campbeltown lie within the wider Highland area, and eligible producers can have choices in regional description. For drinkers, the five familiar names remain the clearest map.

Peat is a production choice, not a postcode

Peat smoke comes from drying malted barley over a peat fire. Islay built a famous reputation around it, but peat appears elsewhere. Our current list includes Highland-region examples such as Ballechin Heavily Peated 15, Ardmore Signatory Vintage releases, Glenturret Peat Smoked 7 and Glenglassaugh Portsoy Peated Coastal.

That makes a useful tasting lesson: compare smoke from different places rather than asking for “an Islay” as if the word guarantees one flavour. The particular expression matters.

Examples from the current menu

For Highland breadth, the menu moves from Aberfeldy 12 and Deanston Virgin Oak through coastal Oban 14, Clynelish 14, richer GlenDronach releases, Glenmorangie cask influences and smoky Ballechin or Glenturret. Speyside is represented by Glenfiddich, while Lindores Abbey brings Lowland whisky to the shelf.

Bruichladdich 21 Re/Define is the listed Islay bottle. Its presence is a reminder that an Islay discussion can go beyond a simplistic “smoke bomb” label. Ask about the bottle in stock rather than relying on the region alone.

Which region is better for a first whisky?

Neither. A beginner who enjoys smoke may prefer a peated dram. Someone who dislikes smoke may still find an Islay expression they enjoy, but it is sensible to begin with the flavour request. Start with what you already like and use the region as context.

Frequently asked questions

Is every Islay whisky smoky?

No. Islay is famous for peated whisky, but the individual expression determines what is in the glass.

Can Highland whisky be heavily peated?

Yes. The current Invergordon list includes several peated Highland examples.

Is Speyside part of the Highlands?

Geographically and under the regulations there is overlap, but Speyside is also one of the five protected regional names used by the industry.

How do I compare two regions?

Keep the pours modest, note the bottle and ask what differs: peat, cask, strength, age and distillery style. Use our plain-English tasting guide.
