Single Malt vs Blended Scotch Whisky: What’s the Difference?

Part of the Invergordon Scottish whisky guide.

Single malt Scotch comes from one distillery and is made from malted barley in copper pot stills. Blended Scotch combines one or more single malt whiskies with one or more single grain whiskies. The category tells you how the whisky was assembled. It does not tell you which one you must prefer.

“Single malt” sounds as if it should mean one cask or one batch. It does not. Bottles from one distillery can contain whisky from several casks, ages and maturation types, provided the final Scotch meets the single malt definition. “Single” means a single distillery.

The five legal Scotch whisky categories

The Scotch Whisky Association lists five categories. Knowing them stops a lot of bar-room nonsense:

CategoryPlain-English meaning
Single Malt Scotch WhiskyMalted barley, one distillery, batch-distilled in copper pot stills.
Single Grain Scotch WhiskyOne distillery, but it may use other cereals and a different distillation method.
Blended Scotch WhiskyOne or more single malts combined with one or more single grain whiskies.
Blended Malt Scotch WhiskySingle malts from more than one distillery, with no grain whisky in the blend.
Blended Grain Scotch WhiskySingle grain whiskies from more than one distillery.

Is single malt better than blended Scotch?

No category has a legal claim to being “better”. A single malt can express one distillery’s character. A blender can combine malt and grain whiskies to create balance and consistency. Both jobs require skill, and both categories contain simple everyday bottles as well as expensive ones.

Choose by flavour and occasion. If you want to compare how distilleries differ, single malts make that easy. If you want an approachable, consistent house style, a blend may be exactly right. Price, age and reputation still do not guarantee that your palate will agree.

What is on the Invergordon shelf?

Our current menu, dated 1 July 2026, lists 41 Scottish whiskies. The range is strongly single-malt focused, including Aberfeldy, Ardmore, Ardnamurchan, Ben Nevis, Blair Athol, Clynelish, Dalmore, Dalwhinnie, Deanston, Edradour, Fettercairn, GlenDronach, Glenfiddich, Glenmorangie, Lindores Abbey, Oban and Tomatin expressions.

That list also shows why category alone is only a start. Deanston Virgin Oak and Deanston 1991 Muscat Cask Finish are both single malts from the same distillery, but age and cask treatment point them in very different directions. Ask what is available today and what the particular bottle is likely to bring.

How should a beginner choose?

  • Say what flavours you enjoy: fruit, vanilla, spice, richness or smoke.
  • Say what you do not enjoy.
  • Set a budget before the whisky is poured.
  • Choose the bottle, not the prestige of the category.
  • Read our first Scotch ordering guide if this is your first dram.
