Start with your own circumstances
Your visa, work, household budget and daily routine matter more than a city ranking. Compare real job options and homes you could rent. A suburb that suits a CBD worker may be inconvenient for someone whose shifts start elsewhere.
Docklands and the city
Docklands is immediately west of Melbourne’s CBD. Southern Cross is a useful transport anchor, but walking times depend on the starting address. Map the route from the property you are considering to work, shops and the places you will use regularly.
Finding an apartment
Compare current listings for the same number of bedrooms and inclusions. Check furnishing, heating and cooling, lift access, noise, building rules, parking and the full rent. Pools, gyms and water views are features to verify, not standard inclusions in every Docklands home.
Build a budget before comparing with the UK
Use take-home income and actual costs for both locations. Allow separately for flights, visa costs, temporary accommodation, bond and setting up a home. Do not rely on an old median rent or a general claim that higher wages cancel out higher prices.
Getting around
Check Transport Victoria’s maps and your actual commute. The Free Tram Zone applies to tram travel within its boundaries; trips beyond it have their own fare requirements. Trains and airport buses are separate services. You may be able to live without a car, but test your weekly travel first.
Schools and universities
For government schools, enter the exact residential address and enrolment year into Find my School. Check eligibility and application requirements with each school. Living near a school does not guarantee an out-of-zone place, and an online star rating is not an enrolment criterion. Compare university campuses by the route to the campus where you will actually study.
Everyday life and shopping

The waterfront outside your front door
Choose a section of the waterfront walk rather than assuming the harbour is one short loop. For a ferry outing, check Port Phillip Ferries’ routes and timetable for the actual destination, departure and return. Weather and schedules matter.

Invergordon Scran is a separate business at 27 Rakaia Way. Check Scran’s own website for its opening and food information. Invergordon Bar has no kitchen; the bar’s BYO takeaway policy remains the way to organise a meal here.

Use Home Affairs to check the conditions of the visa that applies to you. Its UK passport-holder guidance gives an eligible Working Holiday age range of 18–35 inclusive; eligibility is more than an age check. A temporary visa is not a promise of permanent residency.
