A weekend in Docklands works best with a loose plan: time by the water, one or two booked activities, and room for a proper catch-up. This itinerary groups nearby stops without pretending everything is five minutes apart.
Saturday morning: coffee and the waterfront
Start around NewQuay and choose a section of the waterfront walk. If you want to include Library at The Dock, check its opening time and plan the walk to the southern side of the harbour.
Saturday afternoon: choose an activity
Use our guide to The District to choose a film, arcade visit or ice-skating session. Book the activity that matters to you; leave the rest flexible. Check the Melbourne Star announcement before planning a ride, as an expected reopening is not a confirmed session.
Saturday evening: dinner and a pint
Consider Berth or Cargo on NewQuay, checking current menus and bookings. Alternatively, bring takeaway to Invergordon. We have no kitchen and do not provide plates or cutlery. Book your pub table separately from any restaurant reservation.
Sunday morning: a slower start
Return to a stretch of waterfront you missed, or choose an indoor activity if the weather turns. A library stop needs to fit Sunday opening hours. Browse free and cheap options before adding another paid booking.
Sunday afternoon: an event or an unhurried finish
If you have tickets, build the afternoon around the stadium event. Otherwise, a walk and a late lunch may be plenty. For a ferry trip, use the operator’s current destinations and timetable and plan the return before booking.
Getting around and staying over
Tram journeys entirely within the signed Free Tram Zone are free. If your journey starts or finishes outside it, use myki as required. The zone does not make trains, airport buses or every trip from Docklands free. See Transport Victoria’s fare guidance and network and zone maps. Compare the accommodation options by exact location and inclusions. Our usual closing times are 9pm Sunday–Tuesday, 11pm Wednesday–Thursday and midnight Friday–Saturday, with last drinks 30 minutes before closing. Check current opening hours and any event-specific arrangements before planning a late visit.

Many central itineraries work on foot and public transport. Check the specific journeys and access needs in your plan.
Should I book activities?
Book anything with fixed sessions or limited capacity, especially on event weekends.
